German Language Programme

Our levelling corresponds to the levels set out in the CEF (Common European Framework) for language learning. It is a guideline used in Europe to describe language abilities of learners of foreign languages across the world. Its main aim is to provide a method of learning, teaching and assessing which applies to all languages in Europe.

B1Threshold or Intermediate

180 Hours, 12 weeks

  • Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered at work, school, leisure, etc.
  • Can deal with situations most likely to arise while travelling in areas where the language is primarily spoken.
  • Can produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
  • Can describe experiences, hopes and ambitions and briefly give explanations and opinions on relevant situations.

A1Breakthrough or Beginner

120 Hours, 8 weeks

  • Can understand, use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Can introduce themselves to others able to ask and answer questions about their basic personal information.
  • Can interact in a simple way with another person who speak in a slow and clear manner and is prepared to help.

A2Waystage or Elementary

120 Hours, 8 weeks

  • Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment, etc).
  • Can communicate in a manageable way and respond in routine tasks requiring simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • Can describe different aspects of their origin environment and other matters in simple terms.

B2Vantage or Upper Intermediate

180 Hours, 12 weeks

  • Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization.
  • Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes communication with native speakers more possible without any strain from either parties.
  • Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on topical issues while providing the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
